Is This Trend Actually for Me? A Social Media Manager’s Mental Checklist

If you work in social media, you know the feeling.

You open Instagram and suddenly everyone is using the same trend. The same graphic template is everywhere. A new audio is taking off. A specific Reel format is flooding your feed.

And your immediate thought is:

“Do I need to make this for my client?”

Maybe.

But before you start recreating the trend, run through this mental checklist:

✨ Is it on-brand?

Does this trend naturally fit the brand’s personality, voice and visual identity?

If you have to completely change how the brand communicates or do text gymnastics to make the trend work for your brand, it probably isn't the right trend.

The goal isn't to make your client look like everyone else. It's to make the trend feel like them.

✨ Is it relevant to the audience?

Will the people we're actually trying to reach care about this?

A trend can be wildly popular and still be completely irrelevant to your client's target audience.

Think beyond views. If this will be your target demographic’s first time seeing this trend, it might not be for you. Ask yourself whether the trend will entertain, educate, inspire or connect with the people you actually want to reach.

✨ Can we make it our own?

Is there a way to put a unique spin on it?

This is a big one.

If 10,000 other brands are doing the exact same thing, recreating the trend exactly as you've seen it probably isn't going to help your client stand out.

Can you add a brand-specific joke? A different perspective? An educational angle? A niche reference?

Use the trend as the starting point, not the entire creative concept.

✨ Does it have a purpose?

What are we trying to accomplish by posting this?

Maybe the goal is reach. Maybe it's engagement. Maybe it's brand awareness or simply showing personality.

The trend doesn't necessarily need to sell something, but you should know why you're using it.

“Because it's trending” isn't a strategy.

✨ Does it make sense right now?

Can we execute this while the trend is still relevant?

Some trends have a short shelf life.

If it takes three weeks to get approvals, create the content and schedule the post, you might be better off spending that time on something evergreen.

Having a streamlined approval and content creation process makes it much easier to capitalize on trends when the right ones come along.

When I capitalize on a trend right post for my client, I like to send it as a last-minute addition to the month’s content, that way you’re showing your client they’re always top priority and you’re capitalizing on an analytical win for your client…win, win!

✨ Does it help us stand out?

And finally, ask yourself:

Will this make the brand more recognizable… or will it make them blend into everyone else's content?

Because this is the whole point.

Social media is already an incredibly crowded space. If every brand is using the same audio, same format, same text treatment and same joke, there needs to be something that makes your client's version memorable.

So… should you hop on the trend?

If you've answered YES to all of these:

✔️ It's on-brand
✔️ It's relevant to the audience
✔️ We can make it our own
✔️ It has a purpose
✔️ We can execute it while it's relevant
✔️ It helps us stand out

Then YES. Jump on the trend!

But if you answered no to a few of these questions?

Sit. This. One. Out.

There will always be another trend.

As social media managers, our job isn't to make our clients participate in everything that's trending. It's to know when a trend can actually serve the brand.

Because being strategic will always be more valuable than simply being trendy.
